Important International standards for construction documentations ISO, PAS, BS

As technology is evolving faster day by day, Building Information Modeling(BIM) is shaping itself to become the standard, in the building & construction practices, across nations. Presently the standards that are being used, help to achieve Level 2 BIM in which the team uses its own 3D CAD model so as to show how information is being exchanged between parties. Though, this model may no combine into a single-shared model.

With the aim to achieve Level 3 of BIM Maturity, the British Standards Institution (BSI) is announcing its first two international standards for BIM, later this year. This development also comes with a responsibility to address a lot of industry needs with respect to BIM. Level 3 BIM is nothing but a full team collaborative approach between all involving parties and disciplines using a single-shared model. In this, each party can have access to the shared model and also they have the right to modify this model. In literal terms, it would act like an Open BIM, which will reduce the amount of risk relating series of standards.  to conflicting information between the groups.

This announcement of international standards will mark a move for the PAS 1192. Lets discuss more in detail about this expected transition of these standards.

At present, PAS 1192 series of standards are being used to establish a synergetic framework so as to achieve BIM Level 2.

  • BS EN ISO 19650-1 Organization of information about construction works – Information management using building information modelling – Part 1: Concepts and principles, will be replacing BS 1192 which helps in setting out the BIM principles.
  • BS EN ISO 19650-2 Organization of information about construction works – Information management using building information modelling – Part 2: Delivery phase of assets, will replace PAS 1192-2, which emphasizes on the use of BIM during construction of a building.

There are two other international standards expected in early 2020. Let's have a look on them.

  • BS EN ISO 19650-3 Organization of information about construction works – Information management using building information modelling – Part 3: Operational phase of assets, will replace PAS 1192-3, which focuses on operational phase in any building construction.
  • BS EN ISO 19650-5 Organization of information about construction works – Information management using building information modelling – Part 5: Specification for security-minded building information modelling, digital built environments and smart asset management, will take place of PAS 1192-5 which deals with the information security.

This advancement in technology can change the definition of several architectural drafting companies and can shape up their bim modeling services. This will truly be a big achievement for the BIM industries and can bring revolution for many.
