The client is based out of Australia with its headquarter in Perth. With close to 10 years of construction industry experience, the client is a specialist in project planning, coordination, and support. They have multiple project teams with experienced architects, contractors, and engineers to handle projects with enormous complexity. Having severed hundreds of customers across the globe, the client has carved a reliable name for them in the AEC industry.
Project requirement - estimation modeling using Tekla Structures
The client had the requirement of estimation modeling for commercial and industrial projects. Learning the BIM service capability of eLogicTech Solutions and the in-house team of engineers handling projects specific to MEP, Model auditing, cost estimation, and more, the client contacted for the project.
In the form of input files, the client had asked to provide the design drawings and IFC files. As deliverables, they wanted the Tekla model, 3D modeled IFC file and other file formats like BIMX, DSTV, KISS, FABtrol report along with the material list in an Excel file.
Project challenges that our structural engineers overcame
The commercial building comprising of 16 floors has a total build space of 539,000 sft
Every new project brings in some challenges in terms of understanding the client's requirements and forming a project team who are adept at the technology required. This estimation modeling project was no different. eLogicTech's Tekla specialists handles the following obstacles for a hassle-free project delivery:
- Creating a conceptual model and estimation modeling based on the preliminary construction drawings was one of the key challenges.
- Adherence to the client's plan of construction and standards while developing the model related to framing of steel required a lot of brainstorming from our engineering team.
- The client wanted us to frame 5-10% of common connections and to find the same throughout the model was challenging which we overcame through engineering planning and experimental drawings.
Conceptual modeling and project estimation process followed for this project
eLogicTech received the design drawings in PDF format indicating structural plans, sections, and the details for 3D framing in Tekla Structures.
A four-member team of experienced Tekla steel structural engineers was formed for the project.
The skeletal steel framing was developed and the details were elaborated in the project documentation for the client to refer.
Periodic review of the entire project was carried out by a highly experienced Checker and project manager. The following deliverables were developed:
- 3D IFC file
- Tekla model
- Tekla BIMsight file
- STRumis export file
- Material list in Excel format
- Isometric view PDF files
After a through QC process of the model and meticulous documentation, the deliverables were handed over to the client as agreed within 7 days.
Project takeaways - from a pilot project to a long-term engagement
As discussed during the initial calls with the client, the estimation modeling project met the expectations of the client in terms of quality, turnaround time, and detailing. As a result of eLogicTech team's proactive communication and deliverables, the client asked for a long-term project contract and the both the parties shared the benefits out of it.
